Shawman Detterman Meireis scholarship
The Shawman Detterman Meireis Merrowvista Scholarship Fund enables at least one camper from Maine to attend Merrowvista each year.
Shawman Detterman Meireis was a longtime camper and staff member at Merrowvista whose remarkable spark, brilliance, and passion for helping others touched everyone. Shawman was a beacon of warmth and positive energy for the whole camp community.
A gift in her memory will provide empowering and life-changing experiences for campers who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend Merrowvista and will continue her legacy.
Who is Shawman?
Shawman first saw Merrowvista in 1989, when her older brother was a Trailblazer. The following year, she became a Pioneer, and her mom became the camp nurse. Shawman’s two sisters also attended Merrowvista, leading to many years of fun, growth, and engagement with the Merrowvista community.
Shawman returned to Merrowvista year after year. She became known for her incredible smile, endless cheer, warmth, and emerging leadership skills. Cycling Nova Scotia during her Voyager experience, Shawman’s enthusiasm and strength became a memory former campers and leaders still mention. As a camp counselor, Shawman tenderly helped her homesick campers and used her great sense of humor to help campers through those moments. Even after excelling at Boston University, Shawman returned to help in the Merrowvista kitchen one summer.
Shawman's family often called her “Miss Merrowvista” for her great love of camp, which gave her many opportunities to develop values, personal integrity, and a sense of community. So many remember her influence. It is their hope that through this scholarship, others will have the same opportunities and develop the same enduring spirit and love of Merrowvista.
