Growth
Our theme for the day was growth and we saw campers stretching and growing all day long!
Avail Service in the Community
After an early breakfast, the Avail Seniors took a field trip in to Shelby where they volunteered with children in the summer school program. Our campers led games and songs for the elementary summer school students and passed along some Miniwanca Magic. It was exciting to see our oldest campers taking on this leadership role and using their voices to create an experience for younger kids.
Four Trails on the Move
Our Traiblazers are enjoying their big hiking adventure on the North County Trail today. Reagan and Lisa’s Explorer trip is back from their bike trip and with us in camp today– they will head back out on their canoe trip tomorrow. Lizzie and Gayle’s Explorers headed out on their bike trip today and will return to camp next Tuesday. The Adventurers are making wonderful progress along their bike route, set to return to camp August 2. The Odyssey campers have crossed the bridge at Port Huron back into the U.S. and will make their way across Michigan for the next week.
Meanwhile, back at camp, we had the final day of our Interest Groups. In the Woodshop, campers finished their desk caddies and put the final touches on projects. All of the Pottery projects are headed for the kiln and the paracord bracelets are finished in the Craft House.
After a cozy rest hour, we woke to the sound of nearby thunder as a storm system moved by. We felt cool breezes but didn’t get any rain– Miniwanca Magic in action! Campers gathered for songs, cheers and a Lip Sync Battle at Assembly. The temperature had dropped to a perfect 75 degrees as we headed out to afternoon Interest Groups like Paddle Sports, Climbing and Lake Michigan Beach Time.
After a delicious dinner, we gathered in the Council Circle for a lively Tribal Council. Each tribe prepared three acts and shared these very creative skits, songs and cheers with the whole community. There were many highlights, including a series of Trails skits about peaches. The Dunes won the night with their two part drama depicting “Lava Girls vs. Shark Boys” in a suspenseful contest.
Catherine’s cabin led us in a thoughtful reflection on the beach. Each camper shared a personal story about “growth” and we sang The Turning of the World as the day came to a close.
