Emergency preparedness

All staff from directors to cabin leaders train in emergency protocols, first aid/CPR, and crisis communication. Many earn advanced certifications in lifeguarding, wilderness medicine, and emergency management.

We collaborate with local emergency responders and medical providers as we develop and practice response plans. Merrowvista and Miniwanca also undergo yearly accreditation through the American Camp Association to ensure we are current on best practices for emergency response.

Our site teams track multiple weather services and receive NOAA and local alerts to respond proactively to severe weather.

Evacuation routes and shelters are clearly identified across camp. Campers and staff participate in safety drills early in the camp session so everyone knows what to do during an emergency.

All wilderness trips carry cell phones or satellite phones (more remote trips also carry GPS locators) to maintain contact with camp leadership and emergency services. Groups on trail have frequent check-ins with camp throughout their experience.
