Working at Camp FAQ

Yes. The AYF typically partners with camp agencies like Camp Leaders or International Exchange of North America. We can only accept J-1 visas, so applicants must typically be enrolled in a university program. However, there are alternative ways to obtain a J-1 visa.

Yes! There is no requirement for previous experience at camp. The only requirement is a passion for working with youth, and ideally previous experience working with kids in some capacity.

Staff get at least one hour of down time each day. This is time for you to take a nap or shower, do laundry, call home, or just spend time away from campers to recharge. This downtime is scheduled for you, but you can always touch base with your supervisor if you have a specific request.

Staff also get one day off each week. You will have input choosing your days off during staff training. You will have from morning until bedtime to recharge or leave site if you would like. Many staff like to go into town to get coffee, go for a hike, or just have a change of scenery.

The first part of staff training is Skills Week, where most staff learn some camp activities. You’ll follow a typical camp day schedule and learn how to facilitate several different interest groups such as sailing, crafts, sports, and more.

The second part is focused on learning all the ins-and-outs of your specific role. We will cover the foundations of child development, as well as all the specifics like how to eat a meal with your campers.

Staff training for some roles, like Four Trails staff, start two weeks earlier to allow time for Wilderness First Responder and/or lifeguard certification, as well as training on all the gear and curriculum to lead backcountry trips.

Staff are paid biweekly. You can set up direct deposit or you can receive a paper check.

For international staff, we will walk you through the process of getting a social security number and U.S. bank account set up when you are on site.

Miniwanca will host around 500 campers during a typical summer. On average, Girls Camp has 100 to 150 campers at one time, and Boys Camp has 75 to 100 campers at one time. Campers stay in cabins of 5 to 8 with one cabin leader.

Merrowvista will host about 300 campers each summer. On average, there are 100-150 campers at once.

Our staff come from all over the world! We have welcomed staff from the UK, Australia, Sweden, Mexico, Colombia, and more. Our American staff come from all different states, as well. Everyone on staff is at least 18 and out of high school, and some staff and volunteers are in their 70s. Camp is truly an intergenerational place. You will form deep bonds with the people in our community and create lasting friendships.
