Human Resources Director

Position Description:
AYF is excited to add a new role to our team, a Human Resources Director to build and shape the HR programs and practices that enable our most important resources, our talent, to be successful, and sustainably deliver our mission. Over time, the AYF will build out a team to support this role. The Human Resources Director is based in the AYF’s St. Louis location, but will spend significant time, particularly in the summer, traveling to the New Hampshire and Michigan camps, where most of the staff are based and programs are delivered.

What you’ll do:
You will help us achieve our mission by helping us find, select, develop, motivate and retain top talent. You will design and deliver HR initiatives and practices that motivate our high performing, highly engaged year-round staff of 40 and that strengthen their leadership and technical capabilities. You will help us shape and manage our culture to continue to be a strong purpose-driven organization.

Reporting to the President, this newly created position will play a foundational role in shaping this new function for the AYF. You will:

  • Talent Acquisition: Make sure the organization has the depth, breadth, and diversity of talent that is needed by strengthening and formalizing talent sourcing and acquisition practices, both for full-time talent (40 staff) and for seasonal staff (300+)
  • Performance Management: Strengthen and improve the AYF’s high-performance orientation by introducing sound performance management practices so that talent knows what is expected of them, that staff receive regular coaching and feedback and are held accountable for their performance
  • Learning and Development: Help AYF’s talent grow and realize their potential through the design and delivery of learning and development training and practices
  • Talent Deployment: Serve as a trusted partner providing credible counsel to the President and Senior Leadership team on issues of organization structure, talent moves, and staffing transitions. Help develop the policies that enable senior leadership to recognize, promote, move and develop talent
  • Values and Culture: Strengthen the AYF’s mission-led culture by implementing training and practices that maximize employee engagement and proactively address any workplace or performance issues that are not aligned with the core values
  • Rewards and Recognition: Work with Finance Director to ensure that pay and benefits are competitive, and develop and implement recognition programs to reward staff for behaviors consistent with the core values

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of progressive talent/HR experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Established track record of results in previous professional HR/talent roles
  • Flexibility to travel frequently and receptive to living in a camp setting
  • Commitment to our mission and to the core values of best self, balanced living, safety, respect, responsibility, and stewardship
  • Passion to help people grow and develop. You have insight into people and are vested in their success
  • Willingness to create and shape new talent training programs. You are excited to be trusted in this top role and have the initiative to work without direction
  • Creativity and flexibility to work with limited resources. You know how to get results by leveraging publicly available tools and information and are comfortable leveraging your own experience
  • High emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. You establish and create strong relationships across the organization and always treat others with kindness and respect. You enjoy and are an effective coach and you can keep confidences with the information that is entrusted to you
  • Strong written and oral communications skills as much of the material that you develop goes to the broad organization and/or to our Board of Directors
  • Ability to leverage ideas from other organizations, but you know how to manage change in a way that creates buy-in and support
  • Confident, secure and self-aware; does not need external reinforcement to validate her/his self-worth; humility to understand the need to honor and validate the existing culture while moving the AYF forward
  • Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and current HR business trends and best practices

Work Environment

  • Position work is located in St. Louis, MO
  • Office environment
  • Merrowvista and Miniwanca’s sites necessitate the capacity to move through rugged terrain
  • Business casual, appropriate attire for multiple, differing settings
  • Hours as required to meet job demands, generally Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
  • Travel as needed for site visits, recruitment, and meetings
