Director of Camp Programs

Position Purpose

The Director of Camp Programs is a year-round position, responsible for planning and leading an inclusive, residential youth development program at Camp Merrowvista each summer. The Director of Camp Program’s primary purpose is to foster a safe, inclusive, and healthy community environment in which all young people are able to discover and develop their best. Each summer, Camp Merrowvista supports approximately 525 participants and 75 seasonal staff, and this position is the primary representative to all constituency groups (parents, participants, seasonal and full-time staff, alumni, and AYF Board of Directors) and is responsible for ensuring that all state, American Camp Association, and AYF program regulations are implemented and adhered to. Additionally, this position is responsible for the risk management and emergency response within the all-genders camp and adventurer (“Four Trails”) programs, and in support of other programs as appropriate.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain a program that fosters the positive physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health of all campers and staff.
  • Implement summer, residential youth programs that are reflective of the AYF’s organizational philosophy.
  • Create and maintain a positive relationship with participant families throughout the year by being available to address questions, concerns, and feedback.
  • Screen all incoming participants, working with Merrowvista’s registrar to ensure that all necessary forms are submitted for each participant. Oversee an ongoing medical review process; ensuring that AYF can meet the needs of all in the community.
  • Oversee all aspects of the inquiry management process. Prepare and assist with the implementation of annual marketing plan for promotional materials, activities, and events.
  • Manage the production of participant handbooks and forms in conjunction with the program team.
  • Oversee equipment purchases, including manage inventory and programmatic needs.
  • Manage promotional efforts and communications with other AYF programs and sites.
  • Evaluate program quality and implement improvements as needed.
  • Communicate facility, administrative, and food program needs of the program in a timely manner.
  • Fulfill necessary administrative functions related to recruiting, hiring, and training seasonal staff.
  • Serve as a facilitator for programs, as assigned.
  • Attend and fully participate in all Program team meetings.

Secondary Functions

  • Create and manage assigned budgets. Purchase, inspect, and control the inventory of assigned program area equipment. This includes spending monies approved in the budget for these purchases.
  • Serve as a member of the Site Emergency Response team.
  • Serve as a Site Leader with overnight and on-call responsibilities, as assigned.
  • Write year-end Program and Risk Management reports.
  • Actively work to help create an effective and positive work team at the site.
  • Represent the site programs and the AYF at regional, local, and national meetings and events.
  • Other duties as required.

  • Be able to understand, promote, and actively include diverse perspectives and identities.
  • Training, classes or life experiences addressing the most pressing issues shaping the lives of young people within the current U.S. context; most especially racial and gender equity, inclusivity, restorative justice, and cultural competency.
  • Strong emotional health is essential. Be able to exhibit good judgment, problem-solve effectively, and maintain calm in order to safely lead the team to what is in the best interest of participants.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; should be comfortable speaking one-on-one and in front of large groups, as well as with written correspondence across all forms of media. Be able to maintain focus for extended periods while assessing risks and supervising others.
  • Communicate effectively with youth participants and adult staff across a wide range of identities and backgrounds.
  • Be able to respond to and direct participants and/or staff in an emergency.
  • Be able to maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for youth participants.

Preferred Minimum Education, Experience and/or Certification

  • Demonstrable, long-term experience and education in the field of youth development with evidence of direct work with youth as well as supervising staff.
  • First Aid, CPR, Wilderness Risk Management, or other emergency management training preferred.

Preferred Skills and Experiences

  • Commitment to youth development and fully inclusive communities.
  • Experienced educator in an experiential or classroom setting (experience in program design is a plus).
  • Commitment to relationship building, including across social boundaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and support staff.
  • Effective organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to priorities competing demands, and management of deadlines.
  • Computer skills including spreadsheet application and database management.
  • Flexible, innovative, self-starter, and a problem-solver.
  • Background and experience in counseling, mediation, or other human services.
  • Demonstrated customer relations skills, including the ability to present self and organization to individuals, families, and other organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management.

Work Environment

  • Position work is located in Center Tuftonboro, NH.
  • Part-time office, part-time outdoor environment .
  • Merrowvista’s site necessitates the capacity to move through rugged terrain.
  • Business casual, appropriate attire for multiple, differing settings.
  • Hours as required to meet job demands, generally Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm outside of peak program season.
  • Evening and overnight duty during the peak program season – ability to live on site and work six-day weeks in peak season.
  • Travel as needed for recruitment and meetings.
