Merrowvista Program Coordinator

Position Purpose
The Program Coordinator role is a year-round position who works with the Director and fellow Program Coordinator to plan, prepare and deliver inclusive, residential youth development programs, focusing on the summer adventure trips and spring/fall school programs. The PC is heavily involved with running programs in the spring, summer, and fall and helps ensure all state, American Camping Association, and AYF program regulations are followed.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures safety and quality residential programming through intentional program design, risk management and consistent presence.
  • Serves as a member of the Site Emergency Response Team as the Designated Program Leader in the absence of the Program Director during active programming. Occasionally serves as the primary site and program leader in the CSP season.
  • Designs and delivers high school-aged backpacking adventure trips and service-learning curriculum for AYF participants throughout the summer season, including overseeing logistics and scheduling.
  • Serves on the MV summer camp central staff team, assisting with seasonal staff seasonal program staff recruitment and trainings, including leading overnight training trips for adventure staff.
  • Assists with program curriculum development and editing of handbooks. Manages the production of participant handbooks and forms in conjunction with the camp team.
  • Purchases program equipment, manages inventory and gear safety, and identifies programmatic needs.
  • Communicates facility, administrative and food program needs of the camp program in a timely manner.
  • Uses good judgement in risk management practices and ensures program is aligned with AYF policies and ACA standards.
  • Attends and fully participates in all team meetings.

Secondary Functions

  • Assists with summer scheduling and general program design.
  • Manages all assigned budget areas and adheres to AYF Finance policies.
  • Serves as a member of the larger AYF Program team and attends seasonal planning meetings and occasional team virtual check ins.
  • Represents the site programs and AYF at regional, local, and national meeting and events.
  • Assist with facilities and site-related responsibilities throughout the year; especially those that are in conjunction with participant-driven service projects.
  • Other duties as agreed upon in staff meetings or as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Training, classes, or life experiences addressing the most pressing issues shaping the lives of young people, especially racial and gender equity, inclusivity, justice, ethics, and cultural competency.
  • Strong emotional and mental health is essential. Exhibit good judgment, problem-solve effectively, and maintain efficacy to safely lead the team to what is in the best interest of participants.
  • Ability to maintain focus for extended periods while assessing risks and supervising others.
  • Communicate effectively with youth participants and adult staff across a wide range of identities and backgrounds.
  • Ability to respond to and direct participants and/or staff in an emergency.
  • Aptitude for fostering positive relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; should be comfortable speaking one-on-one and in front of large groups, as well as with written correspondence across all forms of media.
  • Effective organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to priorities competing demands, and management of deadlines.

Preferred Minimum Education, Experience and/or Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 to 3 years direct or related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Prior experience working with youth in an outdoor, experiential setting
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office with strong aptitude and interest with demonstrated skills in word processing, spreadsheet and data management applications
  • Computer and database skills
  • Wilderness First Responder, CPR, and lifeguard certification

Work Environment

  • Position is in Center Tuftonboro, NH. The Program Coordinator must live onsite in provided housing during the summer, as well as during assigned program activities throughout the year
  • Merrowvista’s site necessitates the capacity to move through rugged terrain.
  • Part office, part office environment. Attire is business casual with appropriate outdoor clothing as setting dictates.
  • Hours as required to meet job demands, generally Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. outside of peak program season.
    • Evening and overnight duty during the peak program season – ability to live onsite and work six-day weeks the summer.
  • Travel as needed for recruitment and meetings.
